Stillwater police arrested a bail bondsman who they said shot and killed a client, after investigators said the shooting was not justifiable.
Officers responded to the shooting in an office at 116 West 7th Avenue. A bail bondsman, Chasity Carey, called 911 to report that she had just shot a client. The client was found dead at the scene. He was later identified as 38-year-old Brandon James Williams.
Williams had been arrested in late July 2017 and charged with three counts of second-degree burglary as well as possession of marijuana in Payne County, according to police. He was released from jail on Aug. 1 on a $35,000 bond posted by Carey.
Carey told officers she had called Williams to her office with the intent of taking him into custody to revoke his bond and deliver him back to the Payne County Sheriff’s Office. A witness was present during the meeting between Carey and Williams. Carey told investigators that she and Williams got into a fight during the meeting. She indicated she shot Williams in self-defense during the struggle, using a gun she had in her desk.
Police said witness statements as well as evidence found at the scene, including video evidence, contradict Carey’s version of the event. The investigators’ findings indicate that the shooting was not a justifiable act of self-defense.
Carey was arrested at her home in Drumright Wednesday evening on a murder complaint by Stillwater police investigators and the Creek County Sheriff’s Office.
