Bimbo Bakeries USA awarded a $15,000 grant to the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma’s Backpack Program.
Through the Backpack Program, children receive a backpack full of kid-friendly, non-perishable and nutritious food on Friday to sustain them over weekends and school holidays. Last school year, 24,371 students in 500 schools participated in the Backpack Program – an increase of 30 percent from the prior year.
Katie Fitzgerald, chief executive officer of the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma. Said that no child should up hungry, yet one in four Oklahoma children has inconsistent access to healthy food,” “This donation from Bimbo Bakeries gave Oklahoma students the fuel they needed to thrive in the classroom. After all, a child’s chance for a bright tomorrow starts with getting enough healthy food to eat today.”
Together, we can end childhood hunger in Oklahoma. Volunteers are needed to pack Food for Kids meals. For more information on volunteering, or to make a donation to fight childhood hunger, visit regionalfoodbank.org.
