Before 2019, Deer Creek-Lamont has never had an Academic team in the state academic bowl. With their first appearance in school history, the #3 seeded DCLA Eagles Academic team placed 3rd at the Class A State Academic Bowl on Saturday, February 2 at Redlands College in El Reno.
The team was victorious in the first round with a 210-150 win against Leedey and then pulled the upset over the defending state champion Corn Bible 250-190 to win their half of the bracket. In the winner’s bracket final against powerhouse #1 seed Drummond, the Eagles grabbed a 20 point lead after the first quarter, but Drummond would go on to win 220-160. DCLA then played LeFlore for the chance to play Drummond again, but lost to secure the 3rd place finish.
Captain Isaiah Spurlin and Albany Blackburn tied for high scorer for the Eagles with both scoring 200 points in the toss-up rounds. Drummond went on to defeat LeFlore in the finals to win their 20th state championship in program history. Leedey would finish in 4th place.
