PONCA CITY – Several roads along the south side of Ponca City were closed Thursday afternoon after a fire was reported at the Ponca City Phillips 66 Refinery at 4 p.m.

Response teams were quick to respond and the fire was put under control. According to Scott Wallace, HRBP Manager, there were no impacts to personnel or the community, but refinery personnel were dispatched off-site and the air quality was monitored.

Flaring may temporarily increase as flares are important safety devices used in refineries and petrochemical companies. Wallace said that Excess hydrocarbon gases are burned in the flaring system in an environmentally-sound manner as an alternative to releasing vapor directly into the atmosphere.

“The safety of the community, the environment and the people is of the utmost importance to our company and these priorities will guide efforts as we work to resolve the problem.”
