The good news is that Northern Oklahoma and Southern Kansas has received much needed rainfall Wednesday morning. The bad news is that the rain is likely to cause some flooding concerns throughout Wednesday going in to Thursday. At the time of writing this article, the National Weather Service in Norman has issued a Flood Warning for the Salt Fork of the Arkansas River near Tonkawa. The river is expected to crest at 17.8 feet Thursday morning. In Southern Kansas, the National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a Flood Warning for Sedgwick County as flooding is occurring across the Wichita area. At 747 AM CDT, trained weather spotters reported one foot of water over Waterman Street near the VA Hospital in east Wichita due to heavy rainfall over the past 24 hours. Up to two inches of rain have already fallen in the Wichita area. And for Sumner County, A Flood Warning is in effect for the Chikaskia River near Corbin as minor flooding is expected. The Chikaskia is expected to crest at 11.7 feet by early Thursday morning and will fall below flood stage by Friday morning.
Not only is there a flooding concern, but Wednesday will become what Winnie The Pooh would call a ‘Windsday’ as places across Northern Oklahoma and Southern Kansas could see wind gusts over 50 mph.
