Volunteer and civic leader, John Sutton has died at the age of 80. From supporting the development of the Kaw Lake and Dam to being a mover and shaker in bringing the Grand Prix Car Races to Ponca City at Lake Ponca Park, to serving as chairman of the Ponca City Area Chamber of Commerce, Sutton was a civic leader.
If the project benefited Ponca City, Sutton was involved.
Sutton helped to put the Ponca City Ambucs on the national map in several ways … one was serving as the Ambuc National Big Hat President. Sutton was also instrumental in bringing the National Moto-X Races to Ponca City.
One of his last projects was as director of Camp McFadden.
Sutton’s career began as president of the Lincoln Mercury dealership and later he was director of the Marland Mansion and Estate. While he was the director he was instrumental, with the late Paul Prather, in discovering the lost statue of Lydie Marland and returning it to the Estate.
A Rosary will be held at 6 p.m. Friday at the chapel of Trout Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
