Ponca City Schools will continue to be closed today. There is the possibility of more school closures next week. School closings will continue to be made on a day-to-day basis.
Teachers are now pushing lawmakers to pass several more revenue-raising measures, including one that eliminates the income tax deduction for capital gains that would generate about $120 million annually. Another to expand tribal gaming would bring in about $20 million, but both of those measures face broad GOP opposition.
It’s still not clear if the passage of those measures, or another to require certain online vendors to pay sales tax, will be enough to placate teachers and get them to return to the classroom.
Last week, Gov. Mary Fallin signed a revenue package to fund teacher pay raises, also raises for school support staff and public employees.
Despite these measures, teachers continue to rally for funding to be fully restored to Oklahoma education.
Schools in the listening area listed as closed today in support of the teacher walkout are Blackwell, and Enid, Newkirk and McCord. Check with your school to see if they are closed today.
