State leaders discuss when would be a good time to reopen schools

State leaders in Oklahoma are discussing when would be a good time to reopen schools in the state after Gov. Kevin Stitt received a lot of attention for mentioning during a recent Zoom call the possibility of starting a few weeks early.

According to KOCO 5 , during a call that involved the governors from Iowa and Georgia, the discussion of schools was brought up. Stitt said he and state leaders have been in talks with schools and about classes starting a few weeks earlier so kids aren’t missing 6 months prior to the start of the fall semester. Stitt also touched on organized sports activities resuming May 15 and summer camps beginning June 1.

According to the governor’s office, this was one of the many ideas discussed with the Oklahoma State Department of Education.

The OSDE and local schools will make the decisions on school calendars.
