Two individuals involved in accident near Hominy Thursday


A personal injury collision occurred at 4:15 p.m. Thursday afternoon on State Highway 99, approximately 2.7 miles south and 0.8 miles west of Hominy, OK in Osage County.

John Richard Hartness, 51, of Terlton, OK was driving a 2001 Chevrolet 2500 pickup southbound on State Highway 99, following approximately 4 cars behind a crane. Hartness moved his vehicle to the northbound lane and attempted to pass. A secondary vehicle, also travelling behind the crane, moved to the northbound lane in an attempt to pass. Hartness swerved to the east ditch to avoid the secondary vehicle. Hartness accelerated his vehicle and traveled approximately 840’ in the ditch, attempted to reenter the roadway, went approximately 81’ across the roadway and departed to the right in a broad slide. The vehicle went approximately 90’ and struck a barb wire fence, continued approximately 53’ and struck a tree.

Hartness was transported by Hominy EMS to Cleveland Hospital. Cleveland EMS later sent him to St. Francis in Tulsa where he was admitted in fair condition with arm and head injuries. Danny Lee Horton, 47, of Hominy was the only passenger in the vehicle. Horton was transported by Mercy EMS to St. John in Tulsa where he was treated and released.

Airbags were equipped, but didn’t deploy. Seatbelts that were equipped were not in used. No one was ejected from or pinned inside the vehicle. The highway is a 2-lane that’s not divided.

The accident was investigated by Trooper Regnier #219 of the Pawnee/Osage detachment of Troop K. Assisted by Hominy Fire Department, Hominy Police Department, and Osage County Sheriff Department.
