A fatality collision occurred at approximately 10:33 a.m. Sunday morning along State Highway 11 between Waverly Street and Union Street, approximately 3 miles north of Ponca City in Kay County.
Two vehicles were involved in the accident. Jerry Johns, 73, of Ponca City was driving a 2013 Ford F150 westbound on State Highway 11. Johns’ vehicle crossed the center line into the eastbound lane, then entered the eastbound shoulder, striking a 2015 Ford Expedition driven by John Holden, 74, of Braman head-on. Holden’s vehicle rolled a 1/2 time, coming to rest on its top before catching fire. Drivers of both vehicles were pinned for approximately 3.5 hours before being extricated by Ponca City Fire, Newkirk Fire, and Kildare Fire, using Hurst tool.
Johns and Holden were both declared deceased by Ponca City EMS on scene due to injuries sustained from crash. Both bodies were then transported by the Medical Examiner to their office in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
Holden had two passengers with him. Andrew Holden, 38, of Braman transported by Ponca City EMS to AllianceHealth Ponca City, and then to Integris Baptist Medical Center in Oklahoma City. Andrew was admitted in fair condition due to head and internal trunk injuries. The second passenger was a 4-year-old juvenile female from Braman. The juvenile was transported by Ponca City EMS to AllianceHealth Ponca City, and then to OU Children’s Hospital in Oklahoma City where she was admitted in fair condition due to head and internal trunk injuries.
Oklahoma Highway Patrol report states that there was an odor of alcohol on Johns.
During the day Sunday, Kay County Sheriff’s Department released a post on Facebook to advise travelers not to drive on State Highway 11 in the area of the accident.
The accident was investigated by Trooper Beck #700 of the Kay/Noble County Detachment of Troop K. Assisted by Trooper Harper #239 of the Payne/Noble County Detachment of Troop K, Kay County Sheriff’s Office, Ponca City Fire & EMS, Kildare Fire Department, and Newkirk Fire Department.
